The GL11 Community Hub received £1,500 from the Poverty Hurts Fund towards its #WarmGL11 response to the cost-of-living crisis over the winter of 2023-2024 to provide specialist support for vulnerable people struggling with the increase in the cost of living.
GL11 Community Hub is a vibrant, accessible, inclusive, local community centre in Cam and Dursley that works alongside people of all ages who need it most. Those who use their hub are often people who have experienced discrimination, are lonely or socially isolated, lack family support, are dealing with trauma and anxiety, or have short or long-term difficulties in life.
One of those attending the pantry said “I feel so welcome, it’s such a friendly place. I like to contribute something rather getting it for free. I also like the fact that I can choose what I want. I am vegan so there is so much more choice here.”
They also held weekly advice sessions every Wednesday, and providing specialist housing, money, employment and digital support for those in need. They found that all these services were in greater demand than the year before. These ‘Warm Wednesdays’ also offered those attending a hot meal. During this time, 1,240 residents attended and 399 hot meals were served.
