Freemasons: Brain Tumour Support in the community

Brain Tumour Support used a grant of £1,000 from the Freemasons programme to help run community support groups.

The groups provide practical and emotional support to patients and families affected by any type of brain tumour. The groups offer those affected by brain tumours to share their experiences with others who fully understand their circumstances, whilst also reducing isolation.

Information gained at the support groups helps families understand what may be in store with regards to health, preventative measures and what additional professional
help is available.

Feedback from patients and families using the support services show that they:-

  • Feel less isolated and alone, better social support
  • Better able to live independently
  • Increased resilience and better able to cope with the emotional impact
  • Improved financial situation
  • Better able to cope with challenges
  • Better able to cope with loss and bereavement
  • Stronger support network
  • Having a safe space to talk and be themself
  • More self-confidence
  • Better able to find care and support in the community
  • Increased participation in life
  • Feeling useful and valuable and better about themselves

Community support for those affected by brain tumours

"This group helped me so much. I was a mess after diagnosis. I felt so alone. To see and hear others experiencing the same or similar helped me. Take care and keep talking."
